Forestry Consulting Services

Working within Alberta’s forest industry, we participate in all phases of operational forest planning from the development of the general development plan, preliminary harvest design, layout and final harvest plan.

Our forest planning team represent our clients in discussions with regulators, trappers, Indigenous communities and any other stakeholders.

Our team provides a diverse range of land use services from obtaining land use agreements, responding to and issuing land use agreements, through to obtain regulatory approvals for new applications.

We have mapped out work flows and decision-making rules that allow us to process a wide range of land-use requests on behalf of our clients in an efficient manner. We have experience managing a diverse range of land-use needs, such as obtaining or providing CTL/FMA consents, road use, pipeline crossing, or proximity agreements. Working with our clients we have built mobile GIS solutions to help ensure this information is available to operations staff.

Measurement of key forest characteristics such as species, volume, density and quality are important aspects of understanding the forest. These characteristics can greatly influence industrial, cultural and ecological interactions with the forest. On an ecological level, different stand types provide shelter and support to different species of both flora and fauna. On a cultural level, different forest stand types provide a range of intrinsic timber and non-timber values to local communities. Finally, at the industrial level, to adequately plan and execute operations involving the removal of trees from the land base it is important to clearly understand the volume, quality and merchantability of the stands and trees. Our professional staff are qualified to conduct necessary forest mensuration surveys.

Our forestry and GIS staff work in collaboration to develop an estimate of the volume of timber from industrial projects such as oil sands, pipelines, powerlines, and gravel pits. Using a combination of forest inventory data, LIDAR, imagery, and ground truthing, we will determine the volume by species on a project. We can also work with the local forestry mills to determine log quality specifications, and to negotiate the sales of the timber.

Spatial Data Analysis

Spatial data analysis is integral to making wise and well-informed decisions, based on data, not hunches. GIS allows you to overlay various data sets to assess, understand, question, interpret and visualize spatial data. This is instrumental in delineating relationships and ultimately revealing patterns and trends.

A spatial data management system maximizes the value of GIS, enabling managers to make quicker and more confident decisions. As the volume of location-based data continues to grow exponentially, a lot of time and money is invested in creating and collecting data. Without effective spatial data management, much of this data could be lost or inaccessible to future projects.

Oil and Gas

Utilizing a combination of LIDAR, AVI, and ground plots, we prepare timber salvage plans for clients that are clearing sites and need help with determining the volumes of timber, and with the sale of timber to mills.
