Forestry Consulting Services

Working within Alberta’s forest industry, we participate in all phases of operational forest planning, including: the creation of a general development plan, the formation of a preliminary harvest design and layout, and the completion of a final harvest plan.

Our forest planning team represents our clients in discussions with regulators, trappers, Indigenous communities, and any other stakeholders.

Additionally, in unison with their professional expertise, our team works with the latest GIS hardware, software, and data to provide innovative and cost-effective solutions for the challenges facing today’s industry.

We provide a diverse range of land-use services – from obtaining regulatory approvals for new applications and land-use agreements, to issuing and responding to land-use agreements.

We have mapped out workflows and decision-making rules that allow us to efficiently process a wide range of land-use requests on behalf of our clients. Our diverse experience includes obtaining or providing CTL/FMA consents – as well as managing road-use, pipeline crossings, and proximity agreements. Working with our clients, we have built mobile GIS solutions to ensure this information is available wherever and whenever it’s needed by operations staff.

Measuring key forest characteristics such as species, volume, density, and quality is an important aspect of understanding the forest. These characteristics can greatly influence a forest’s industrial, cultural, and ecological interactions – for example:

  • On the ecological level, different forest stand types provide shelter and support to a variety of flora and fauna species.
  • On the cultural level, stand types provide a range of intrinsic timber and non-timber values to local communities.
  • At the industrial level, it is important to clearly understand the volume, quality, and merchantability of the stands and trees. This understanding is essential in order to adequately plan and execute operations for the removal of trees from the land base.

To assist you with managing the large scope of these characteristics, our professional staff are qualified to conduct all the necessary forest mensuration surveys you require.

Our forestry and GIS staff work together to develop an estimate of the volume of timber derived from various industrial projects ranging from oil sands and pipelines to powerlines and gravel pits. Using a combination of forest inventory data, LIDAR imagery, and ground truthing – we will determine the volume-by-species on any given project. In addition to this, we work with local forestry mills to determine log quality specifications as well as to negotiate the sale of a project’s timber.

Spatial Data Analysis

Spatial data analysis is integral to making wise and well-informed decisions based on data – not hunches. GIS allows you to overlay various datasets to assess, understand, question, interpret, and visualize spatial data. This is instrumental in delineating relationships and, ultimately, revealing patterns and trends.

Excellent maps are not only accurate and up to date, but they are also concise – displaying the right information you need, in the format that works best for your situation. Our team of professional foresters specialize in operational planning. We help our clients prepare General Development Plans (GDPs) as well as preliminary and final harvest plans (including block layouts).

We work hard to ensure that all our clients receive the regulatory permits they need for their annual harvesting operations. Furthermore, we have experience managing field-level data collection in addition to the collation and analysis of data associated with temporary sample plots, permanent sample plots, research plots, and timber cruising.

Oil and Gas

Utilizing a combination of LIDAR, AVI, and ground plots; we prepare timber salvage plans for clients that are clearing their sites. We aid them with determining the volumes of their timber as well as the sale of it to mills.

Government

We are well-experienced with completing field work required for the ongoing measurement of permanent sample plots and forestry research projects.

Indigenous Communities

Our team develops forest management plans to manage the forest according to the values of a community – integrating a combination of scientific and traditional ecological knowledge into each plan.

Private Landowners

Working with our extensive group of industry partners, we assist private landholders with determining the feasibility of pursuing carbon offset revenue.
